Now that Spider-Man: Homecoming is in theaters, it’s time to talk about some questions fans have had… like who is Zendaya‘s character Michelle?!
When the first trailer for the movie was released, we discovered that the 20-year-old actress wasn’t playing the love interest of Peter Parker. That role was given to newcomer Laura Harrier.
Zendaya‘s character was only seen in one scene of the trailer in which she makes fun of Peter at lunch.
Well, the character Michelle is barely in the movie, but the ending of the movie teases that she might get a much bigger focus in the sequel.

SPOILERS BELOW – PLEASE BE AWARE!
Michelle is one of the Peter Parker’s classmates in high school and she is on the debate team with him. When Laura‘s character Liz moves out of town at the end of the film, the team captain position is vacated and it goes to Michelle.
When Michelle is talking to her teammates about leading the team, she says “People call me MJ.” This is a reference to Peter Parker’s eventual love interest in the comic books, who was known as Mary Jane!
