As world leaders gathered in Hamburg, Germany for the 12th annual G20 summit, the leaders of the music world did their own flexing on a concert stage.
The likes ofColdplay, Shakira, Pharrell Williams, Ellie Goulding, Herbert Grönemeyer and Andreas Bouranilined up for first Global Citizen Festival in Europe, held at Barclaycard Eve on the eve of the high-level pow wow.
Global Citizen, the not-for-profit social action platform, organized the concert as a type of musical rally to remind heads of government to meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable, from the poor, hungry, and the displaced.
Speakers on the night included Justin Trudeau and Erna Solberg, the respective prime ministers of Canada and Norway, and Argentine president Mauricio Macri, who pledged that education will be a signature of the G20 when his country hosts next year’s summit.
The festival “achieved concrete commitments from leaders and advocates across the world towards some of the greatest global issues of our time, including the education deficit, global health security, gender equality and the refugee crisis,” organizers boast in a statement.
Highlights from the pop concert included Pharrell’s performance of “Happy,” Ellie Goulding’s rendition of “Love Me Like You Do” and a collaboration between Coldplay and Shakira on the British band’s Ghost Stories track “A Sky Full of Stars”. Check out the clips below.
